Who needs CPR, AED & First Aid training?
OSHA requires employers to make medical personnel or first aid help available to employees. Where there is no infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace, a person or persons must be adequately trained to render first aid (29 CFR 1910.151(b)). CPR, AED & First Aid training questions
Common questions about workplace first aid, CPR and AED training requirements. If your situation is more specific, contact us to discuss your team and workplace.
Does OSHA require first aid training?
Where there is no infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace, OSHA requires that a person or persons be adequately trained to render first aid (29 CFR 1910.151(b)). In construction, a person with a valid first aid certificate must be available at the worksite when medical care is not reasonably accessible (29 CFR 1926.50(c)).
Is CPR training required?
OSHA’s general first aid standards do not specifically name CPR, but some standards do. For example, confined space rescue services must have at least one member holding current first aid and CPR certification (29 CFR 1910.146(k)(2)(iii)), and CPR-trained persons must be available for certain electric power work (29 CFR 1910.269(b)(1)).
Who issues the certification?
CPR, AED and First Aid certification is issued through the Health & Safety Institute (HSI).
Are first aid supplies required too?
Yes. OSHA requires adequate first aid supplies to be readily available (29 CFR 1910.151(b)), and in construction, first aid supplies must be easily accessible when required (29 CFR 1926.50(d)).
Can first aid and emergency planning be reviewed as well?
Yes. First aid and emergency response can be reviewed as part of safety program development and safety audits and inspections.
